3 mm vs. 1/8 Inch: How to Write a Clear Wholesale Plywood Specification
Updated: 7 days ago
A useful wholesale specification removes ambiguity before a sample becomes an order. Thickness is a good place to start: a retail label and an exact dimension do not always mean the same thing.
Start with the Exact Conversion
One inch is exactly 25.4 mm. Therefore, 1/8 inch is exactly 3.175 mm, 1/16 inch is 1.5875 mm and 1/4 inch is 6.35 mm. A panel specified as 3 mm is not, by exact conversion, the same as a panel specified as 1/8 inch. The difference between those two nominal values is 0.175 mm.
This does not mean every product sold in an inch category has an exact fractional-inch thickness. A supplier may use a familiar retail category for a nearby metric panel. The buyer still needs to identify the actual specification. NIST provides the underlying inch definition; the fractional conversions here are arithmetic based on that definition.
Nominal inch value: 1/16 inch · Exact metric conversion: 1.5875 mm · Separate common metric request: 1.5 mm
Nominal inch value: 1/8 inch · Exact metric conversion: 3.175 mm · Separate common metric request: 3 mm
Nominal inch value: 1/4 inch · Exact metric conversion: 6.35 mm · Separate common metric request: 6 mm
Why This Matters for a Material Business
Your customer may use a panel for a slotted assembly, a layered design or a production fixture. A title that reads '1/8 inch' is not enough information to assess those applications. If the material changes between orders, the existing design may need a new fit check.
For a reseller, clear product data also supports more accurate listings and customer support. Keep the nominal sales category, the specified nominal thickness and the agreed tolerance as distinct fields in your purchasing and catalog records. Do not silently replace one value with another during a listing update.
Ask Four Thickness Questions
What nominal thickness is being quoted, with units?
What finished thickness range will be used for acceptance?
Where and how will the panel be measured?
Is the proposed sample the same construction and specification intended for the bulk order?
Specify More Than Thickness
A plywood species name may describe the face veneer, while the core uses another construction. Retain the face and back specification, core, ply count where applicable, adhesive information and surface treatment alongside thickness.
Record width and length in explicit units as well. A 300 × 300 mm sheet is approximately 11.81 × 11.81 inches, not exactly 12 × 12 inches. Exactly 12 inches is 304.8 mm. If your business advertises a 12-inch square, ask for that finished dimension and agree a tolerance rather than assuming the metric sheet is interchangeable.
The same applies to machine-bed formats. Record the usable dimensions and any clearance requirement. A supplier's machine-themed category can help navigation, but it should not replace the written size specification or your own fit review.
Use a Purchasing Reference You Can Reorder
A practical reference contains the material family, construction, nominal thickness, tolerance, finished sheet dimensions, surface condition, pack count and a specification revision. Add the sample ID and the measurement record when the sample is reviewed.
When you compare quotations, first check that those fields describe the same material. A lower price for a different core, thickness, finish or pack quantity is not a direct price comparison. Compare the selling unit, included packaging and delivery terms after the material itself is aligned.
Keep a separate SKU or configuration reference when the exact thickness differs. This avoids using a retail category as a substitute for a purchasing specification.
A Simple RFQ Example
Illustrative inquiry, subject to material and production confirmation: basswood-faced plywood for a distributor material program; 3.00 mm nominal thickness; finished sheet size 300 × 500 mm; required tolerance and core to be agreed; bulk packaging and private-label pack options to be quoted. Initial quantity, destination and sample requirements should be supplied by the buyer.
If your requirement is an exact nominal 1/8 inch instead, state 3.175 mm as that separate request and confirm feasibility. Do not change the requirement to 3 mm merely because another website uses the same retail label.
